High-dose antioxidant

This vitamin E supplement contains 400 I.U. (= international units) per gelatine capsule, which is equivalent to 267mg. Vitamin E is available as D-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, which is the precursor of vitamin E and therefore a provitamin. In the body, it is easily converted into vitamin E after ingestion.

Function of vitamin E

The main task of the vitamin is to protect the cells from oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is an excess of reactive oxygen compounds produced by certain metabolic processes. These are also called "free radicals". Normally, the cells in the organism form substances that neutralise these free radicals. However, if there are too many free radicals, they can damage the cells.
Antioxidants such as vitamin C or vitamin E can reduce an excess of free radicals and thus contribute to cell protection, especially those of the skin.
Nevertheless, one should not be anxious to fight all free radicals in the body with the help of antioxidants, as they are used by the immune system to destroy unwanted microorganisms.

Vitamin E in food

Although in nature vitamin E is only produced by plants, it also finds its way into animals via the food chain, which is why it is contained in both plant-based and animal-based foods.
A very good source of vitamin E, for example, is wheat germ oil, which contains about 174mg per 100g. It is closely followed by sunflower oil and safflower oil with 63-45mg per 100g. Walnuts can also contribute very well with 6mg per 100g to meeting demand.
Among the animal-based foods, fish such as mackerel, trout and redfish are the leaders when it comes to vitamin E content.

Vitamin E requirement

The DGE (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e.V. - German Nutrition Society) has established the following dietary recommendations for normal-weight, healthy adults, which prevent a vitamin E deficiency:
  • Women 19 to under 65 years: 12mg/day
  • Women 65 years and older: 11mg
  • Pregnant women: 13mg/day
  • Breastfeeding women: 17mg/day
  • Men 19 to under 25 years: 15mg/day
  • Men 25 to under 51 years: 14mg/day
  • Men 51 to under 65 years: 13mg/day
  • Men 65 years and older: 12 mg/day
The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has also established a safe daily upper intake level (TDI), in which vitamin E does not cause any side effects when it's taken from any source on a daily and lifelong basis: It is 300mg/day for adults 19 years of age and older.
