Selenium is a semi-metal and is one of the essential trace elements. It occurs in the form of inorganic salts (sodium selenite, sodium selenate) and organic compounds (selenomethionine, selenocysteine). In food, selenium is present in plant foods as selenomethionine and in animal foods as selenocysteine.
Selenomethionine is found primarily in the human body. It is similar to the essential amino acid methionine, but has a selenium atom instead of a sulfur atom.
In all organs we find different concentrations of selenium. The highest concentrations are found in the skeletal muscles, liver, kidneys, spleen, testicles and blood platelets.
Selenium methionine is processed more easily by the body than non-organic selenium, such as selenite. In addition, its half-life is longer than that of inorganic selenium, which enables greater utilisation of the trace element.
